Using a U.S. document in France
Step by step
- Order a certified long-form copy of the U.S. record (e.g. birth or marriage certificate).
- Get the apostille from the competent U.S. state authority; depending on the state, it can be requested together with the vital record or must be sent to the state's Secretary of State.
- If the document is not in English (for consular civil-status files) or will be used before other French authorities, obtain an official French translation by a professional/qualified translator.
- Submit the apostilled original to the French consulate (e.g. transcription into French civil records) or to the French authority requesting it.
Translation
For civil-status transcriptions handled by the French consulates in the U.S. (births, marriages), records written in English do not need to be translated; records in another language require an official translation by a professional translator. For other procedures in France, Service-Public.fr states that a foreign-language public document must be accompanied by a French translation made by a qualified translator.
Common uses
- Transcription into French civil records of a marriage celebrated in the U.S.
- Transcription of a U.S. birth certificate (child of a French national)
- Foreign spouse's birth certificate for French civil-status files
- Visa applications for France (via France-Visas)
Important
French consulates in the U.S. ask for the foreign spouse's full birth certificate dated less than 6 months, apostilled or legalized, and for a French spouse's full birth certificate dated less than 3 months. The visa page does not list document formalities; France-Visas indicates the supporting documents for each visa.

Editor's note
HCCH status table: France ratified 25-XI-1964, in force 24-I-1965. The former consulfrance.org / franceintheus.org consular pages now redirect to us.diplomatie.gouv.fr. Official pages say 'professional translator' (consulates) and 'qualified translator' (Service-Public); neither page reviewed explicitly requires a 'traducteur assermenté / expert près une cour d'appel', so that term is not used. Visa-specific document rules (apostille/translation for long-stay visas) were not found on official pages reviewed. French residence-permit, nationality and marriage-in-France requirements were not verified in this pass. No general apostille validity period found.
